Here are pieces I have done professionally and to showcase the Multimedia skills I have acquired. One thing I have learned is if I don’t have the skill yet, there’s always room to learn.

I have been a part of the Social Media Team for KTRH since 2023. My job is to take web news pieces uploaded to Spreaker.com and come up with a composite that goes with the story. The three that I have chosen are ones that have garnered the most views on TikTok. I use a combination of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro and After Effects to come up with my final product. It seems like overkill, but with these powers combined it creates a nice combination.

I will share more of my Social Media Composites in the next section.

I normally have only an hour to create my composites. Instead of storyboarding, sketching, and other “luxuries” graphic designers usually have, I have to come up with an idea and hit the ground running. Luckily, I had a bolt of inspiration hit me for one news story I could choose from, and I’m not sure if many people picked up on the pop culture reference that inspired it. I was asked to create a series of graphics for our radio station’s website that were more than just simple candidate vs candidate on a blue back ground. I talked with my news director and we came up with a plan to create UFC-style posters to get people excited for the upcoming election. I studied some of the more recent UFC fight cards, went to went to Getty Images, and used both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to get voters ready to visit the polls. I had around 36 hours to create media packages for the Presidential, Senatorial, Texas races, and Harris County races.

Election 2024

Hello Garage of West Houston had just become a partner with the National Association of Productivity and Organization - Houston Chapter, and my boss wanted me to create a flyer introducing our company to the NAPO audience. I took pictures from four of our best installations, stayed true to the corporate brand book, and created the flyer you see to the right. I used guidelines learned from my classes at Lone Star College to help with the aesthetics and make this flyer work.

Even though Beryl was not as strong as Hurricane Harvey, it still brought heavy winds which caused damage in the Houston area and along the Gulf Coast. I was asked to create these graphics for the radio station’s website, even though they were not used. I found pictures of places (Jamaica Beach on the left, Port O’Connor on the right) that were in the path of the storm, added storm clouds, changed them from sunny to gloomy, and tried to set the stage for what was on the way. Not-so-fun fact: I was producing the live radio call-in weather update show from 8 pm until 4 am when I was told to go home around 4:30. I frantically got in my car and drove home in 45-55 mph winds before the storm REALLY hit Houston. On the bright side—very few cars on the roads.

Even garage floors need a space on the social spaces to be sold. I worked for Hello Garage of West Houston for around two years utilizing the main company’s brand book, incorporating both static photos and video, and thumb wrestling Cap Cut to help bring Polyaspartic Flooring and Garage Supplements to life. Our Social Media sites were awarded “Best Social Media Presence Company wide” for 2022.

One of my hobbies is going around Houston and, on the odd chance—-the country—-and take pictures of great neon signs. Unfortunately, these pieces of art are going the way of the do do and are being replaced by either light-boxes or L.E.D. signs. I have created a full social media campaign for the release of a possible (fingers crossed) book based on my library of photos of neon signs around the Houston, TX Area. I used Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, Maxon, and Premier Pro to make this campaign work.

In my Hype Reel, I mention that Houston is the Capital of Hip Hop. Did I just make that up?

NOPE!

There was an article in the Houston Chronicle entitled “Houston is the Hip Hop Capital of the World” by Shelby Stewart from 2020. Whether you agree or not… I don’t care! It’s written in blood and therefore I’m going to go with it! Yeah, the article is 5 years old, but I’m not going to let that stop me.

Classic cars and great oldies, it’s the perfect combination for folks who want to have a great night out with the family and enjoy a bit of Americana (with some classic cars from around the world). Randy and the crew really have created a wonderful atmosphere for folks from 0-100+ to come out, feel safe, and enjoy a night out with your closest friends that you haven’t met yet. Cindy does the photography for the Instagram page, and this Media System would be a great support for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and possibly Youtube.

S&S Exotic animals

When I was a kid, animals were my jam. I had an animal encyclopedia and I would look through that thing for HOURS! I watched Nature on PBS, Wild Wild World of Animals, anything I could get my hands or eyeballs on. When I learned about S&S Exotic Animals in Aldine, I was stoked. I finally got out there to talk with them and on my first visit I was just planning on coming back with a better camera and taking some footage. I was asked point blank if I wanted to take some video THAT DAY I knew that my answer had to go from “I can come back” to “I have a camera on my phone, let’s make this work!”

S&S doesn’t have an official logo, so I made one out of a Brutalist font with a Prairie Dog acting as the ampersand. They have an awesome prairie dog named “Precious” in the store and I was glad to represent her in the logo.

Mascot design

Do I like to Draw? Yes!

Am I a Professional Illustrator? No.

When a friend of mine approached me on Twitter/X to draw a mascot for their Cross-fit company about a year or two ago, I jumped at the chance to do it! It gave me a chance to try something new, to push myself in a way I haven’t been pushed before, and see what I could do with Illustrator. I worked with my friend and tweaked the sketches, changed the grip of our extremely buff Flamingo, and made a mascot worthy of the company she worked for. That bird is comfortably lifting over 400 lbs, and doing so with a smile on his face!

American football jersey design

A few years ago, I was going through some jersey designs of a company called Nuola out of the UK that specialize in American Sports Uniforms. I saw their 2018 “Salute the Services” kits and thought out loud, or rather typed on their Instagram page that what they had was a bit cliche…or something like that.

Americans are gonna be Americans, amirite?

Well, they called me out on the floor and said, “Well, can you do any better?”

We worked together and came up with a final design we both were happy with. Here’s the step-by-step process we went through to get to the final product.

I love old school football uniforms. Also, I fall into the Uni Watch camp that if you are going to honor the military, go with a look from the past. I mixed a Regimental Badge/ACME Packers look for the front numbers with a Beret sleeve cap. I also use a stripe around the midsection as a nod to the belts worn by different regiments in the British Military. Jodi from Nuola was afraid of getting sued by using military regalia on the uniforms.

Here are some more designs I sent in. If you notice the name on the back, it says “Rigby.” Fusilier Lee Rigby, a member of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was brutally murdered in the streets of London in 2013. I felt it was only fitting to pay homage to this soldier in my designs. I also lived in the town of Rigby, ID when this event happened. That’s more of a happenstance, but it’s in the official record now.

In the end, we worked together to create a fantastic looking final product. They sent me my own version of the jersey and I wear it proudly on Remembrance Day (Veterans Day). I’m also glad that Jodi reigned me in on the final product. They created a Royal Navy and a Royal Air Force version of this jersey for their 2019 “Salute the Forces” campaign. It’s crazy how one day you’re shooting off your mouth and the next, you’re designing an American Football Jersey for a Uniform Company in the UK.
